Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Giolito's first season with Boston ended before it began when he suffered an elbow injury in spring training that required surgery. Doctors opted for an internal bracing procedure, which gave Giolito a chance for a normal offseason. He began throwing in August and was in Fort Myers on a throwing program during the offseason. There could be restrictions early on, but Giolito is expected to be at spring training with other pitchers. He received Cy Young votes every season from 2019 to 2021, but his career arc took a hit in 2023 when he gave up 41 home runs with a 41.9 percent hard-hit rate. He said the troubles were due to falling behind batters and missing location in the zone. Thought of as a front-end starter after signing with Boston, it's a good bet that the organization isn't counting on a top-of-the-rotation starter in 2025, but the 30-year-old should have a spot at the back end. Walks six in no-decision
Giolito allowed four runs on five hits and six walks while striking out one over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Saturday.
Analysis
Giolito hasn't had control problems this year, but he struggled to find the strike zone Saturday, landing just 55 of 97 pitches for strikes. The six walks were double his previous season high, but he's now allowed four or more runs in three of his last five starts. Giolito has a reasonable 3.77 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 82:33 K:BB through 100.1 innings over 18 starts this year, and his recent shaky performance can be chalked up to a tough run of opponents. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Marlins.

In 2022, Giolito registered a 4.90 ERA but a 3.66 xFIP and 3.79 SIERA portended a rebound last season. Things did not turn out as hoped for as Giolito recorded a 4.88 ERA pitching for three different teams. This time, the bloated ERA was mostly supported by its estimators as the righty's control and command suffered all season. Fanning 204 in 184.1 innings was solid, but a 9.2 percent walk rate and 41 homers surrendered were major reasons the White Sox and Angels gave up on Giolito before the pitching desperate Guardians picked him up to absorb innings down the stretch. Giolito's velocity and pitch mix was in sync with recent seasons, and after signing a two-year deal (with an opt-out after the first year) with Boston, there's hope that new pitching coach Andrew Bailey can help Giolito maximize a sweeper and return to the form he showed in the first half last year with Chicago (3.45 ERA). Giolito misses bats and hasn't missed more than a start or two every season since 2018, although he'll now be pitching in his most hitter-friendly home park to date.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Hoping to stay in Boston
Giolito said Wednesday he "really love[s] it" in Boston and doesn't want to be traded, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
Analysis
The right-hander was dealt from the White Sox to the Angels at the summer deadline in 2023 and struggled mightily for the Halos with a 6.89 ERA in six starts, which resulted in him being waived and finishing the campaign in Cleveland. Giolito had spent the previous six-plus seasons of his MLB career in Chicago, and he's hoping to avoid going through another midseason change of scenery. The 30-year-old has a club option for 2026 -- which transitions into a mutual option if he pitches at least 140 innings this season -- but his contract doesn't include any trade provisions, so there are no contractual hurdles should the Red Sox want to trade him.
