Ryan McBroom
28-Year-Old OutfielderOF
2020 Fantasy Outlook
McBroom turns 28 just after the start of the 2020 season, and has all of 23 games of major-league experience. He has made a career of hitting in the minors, and was one of the many guys to have a huge year in Triple-A last year with a .315/.402/.574 slash line that included 26 home runs and 87 runs scored. The bar is very high for right-handed-hitting first baseman, which helps explain why someone like McBroom has taken so long to reach the major leagues. Kansas City has nothing to lose in 2020 by giving McBroom the starting role and seeing if he can do what Luke Voit and C.J. Cron did as older right-handed first base guys when given the opportunity to hit. The only thing currently in his way is Ryan O'Hearn, who is coming off a dreadful 2019 season. Read Past Outlooks

Heading for platoon at first base?
OFKansas City Royals
March 18, 2020
Manager Mike Matheny said March 6 that McBroom and Ryan O'Hearn could begin the season in a "soft platoon" at first base, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McBroom made his major-league debut last season and had a .293/.361/.360 slash line with five doubles in 23 games, and he showed well before spring training was suspended with a 1.026 OPS. O'Hearn struggled heavily in 2019 with a .195/.281/.369 line, but he also performed well in spring action. O'Hearn would have the clear advantage for playing time as the left-handed bat, but the potential platoon illustrates McBroom's likely roster security for the eventual start of the season.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
