Ronald Bolanos
23-Year-Old PitcherSP
Kansas City Royals AAA
2020 Fantasy Outlook
Bolanos may have gotten lost in a sea of Padres' pitching prospects, though it was certainly hard to predict that he'd go on to make his major-league debut in 2019 after spending the entirety of the previous season at High-A Lake Elsinore, where he recorded an unconvincing 5.11 ERA. He improved that number to 2.85 in 10 starts at the same level to open the season and then recorded a 4.23 ERA in 76.2 innings for Double-A Amarillo, apparently a good enough number to earn him a big-league look in September. He looked generally overmatched in three starts and two relief appearances for the Padres, stumbling to a 5.95 ERA and a 13.6% walk rate. He's unlikely to be one of the Padres' top five starting options to begin the year and will probably open the season in Triple-A for the first time. He doesn't have a particularly impressive resume or prospect profile, so his next opportunity may come in relief. Read Past Outlooks

Removed from active roster
PKansas City Royals  AAA
August 2, 2020
The Royals optioned Bolanos to their alternate training site Sunday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Bolanos started in his two appearances with the Royals, but he acted as more of an opener than a traditional starter in those outings, covering two innings or fewer in both appearances. With the Royals needing to clear a spot on the active roster for Jakob Junis (COVID-19) ahead of his scheduled start in Sunday's series finale, Bolanos was ultimately deemed expendable after he was lit up for five runs on five hits and two walks while recording only five outs in Saturday's 11-5 loss.

Stat Review
How does Ronald Bolanos compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
