Hamstring
September 8, 2023
The Yankees placed Abreu on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain.
ANALYSIS
Abreu has struggled of late, logging a 7.20 ERA and 1.87 WHIP through 15 frames since Aug. 1. He'll now be put on the shelf for the next two weeks, though that still leaves time for him to return before the end of the season. Nick Ramirez was brought up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

Stat Review
How does Albert Abreu compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2016
Every year a few players see their stock skyrocket after the Arizona Fall League, and Abreu is the top example from 2017. His 70-grade fastball can touch triple digits, but he can park it at a free and easy 95-96 mph. Abreu also features a potentially 70-grade changeup and potentially plus curveball. The two potential impediments for him becoming a frontline starter are his shaky command/control and unproven durability. He has a 4.2 BB/9 for his career, and while he has made gradual improvements in that department over the past calendar year, it's hard to confidently project him to ever have better than fringe-average command. Abreu logged a career-high 101.2 innings in 2016, but had two arm-related DL stints in 2017 that limited him to just 53.1 innings. While those injuries would typically be quite troubling, his AFL success has helped erase concerns about the health of his arm. He has the impact potential dynasty-league owners crave in pitching prospects, and could be a big-league rotation option in 2019.
Abreu came over from Houston as part of the trade for Brian McCann. He has four pitches but struggles to locate them. His fastball can overwhelm opposing batters, but he needs to show much more consistency with his curveball, slider and changeup. The 21-year-old righty out of the Dominican Republic had a 3.72 ERA and 115:58 K:BB in 101.2 innings between Low-A and High-A in 2016, getting by on raw stuff alone -- needs to work on pitchability. While the strikeout stuff is there, Abreu's success or lack thereof at the higher levels will depend on whether he's able to clean up his delivery and refine his offspeed pitches. He could still end up as a power reliever, but the Yankees will likely start him at High-A as a starter to begin the 2017 campaign.
Abreu, a 20-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, pitched 13 games (seven starts) for the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League last season. He helped Greeneville win the league title while the team set new pitching records for team ERA (3.18) and opponent's batting average (.238). There's one red flag with Abreu, however; his spotty control (3.9 BB/9), which will need improvement as he ascends the Astros minor league system. He will open 2016 with the short-season Tri-City ValleyCats, but could conceivably reach as far as High-A before the end of the year.
