2026 Fantasy Outlook
Bello's 3.35 ERA looks strong on the surface, but underlying metrics suggest it should have been closer to a run higher. He benefited from an unusually low BABIP for a groundball pitcher and a favorable left-on-base rate. Although he sharpened his control and did a better job limiting home runs, his strikeout rate dropped sharply to a modest 17.7 percent. A shift in pitch mix contributed to the decline: he threw more four-seamers and added a cutter while reducing his slider and changeup usage, even though those two pitches generate most of his whiffs. The Red Sox have a solid track record of helping pitchers adjust, so there's a pathway for Bello to regain some of his lost swing-and-miss ability. Still, if the strikeout rate remains low, his ERA is likely to fall in line with the estimators. Read Past Outlooks
Jumped early in loss
Bello (2-5) took the loss against Atlanta on Sunday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings.
Analysis
Bello allowed runs in four of his five innings pitched, including five across the game's first two frames. He generated just seven swinging strikes on 98 pitches and yielded 11 hard-hit balls in his first start since April 29 after two impressive performances in bulk relief to open May. The 27-year-old now owns an unsightly 7.16 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 30:20 K:BB across 44 innings this season and lines up for a home matchup against the Twins next weekend, though it's currently unclear in what role that will be.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Bello signed a six-year extension during spring training, picked up an Opening Day win and early on looked like a No. 1 starter. Then the walks started. He went from 76th percentile in BB% (6.7) in 2023 to 33rd (9.1) in 2024. The right-hander managed to win 14 games but needed good run support during the rough patches. Bello's 4.49 ERA was the worst among starters with at least that many wins. Walks don't always kill, but they hurt during the first half when he allowed 14 home runs over 89.2 innings (1.4 HR/9) and entered the break with a 5.32 ERA. The walks didn't stop in the second half, but Bello was able to prevent damage through better location which kept the ball in the park; he allowed just five homers in 72.2 innings (0.6 per nine) following the break. The pressure to lead the staff won't be on the 25-year-old in 2025, as Bello should slot behind Garrett Crochet and Tanner Houck -- and possibly Walker Buehler.
