2025 Fantasy Outlook
Phillips, a second-round draft pick by the Mariners in 2020, ended up in Cincinnati as the player to be named later in the 2022 Eugenio Suarez trade. He got a brief look in the majors 2023 but was nowhere to be found at the big-league level last season. The right-hander totally lost his feel for the strike zone in the minors, to the point that the Reds had to hit the reset button and send Phillips to rookie ball to iron things out. He returned to Triple-A Louisville to make a handful of starts at the end of the season and pitched fairly well in September around continued fits of wildness. Until he shows significant improvement with his command and control, Phillips will remain a volatile and untrustworthy option. Read Past Outlooks

Analysis
Phillips received a brief look with the Reds in late June and will now get another chance in the majors. The right-hander kept the opposition off the board in three of his four relief appearances for Cincinnati but surrendered four earned runs in the other outing and has a 4:4 K:BB overall in five innings.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
A second-round pick by the Mariners in 2020, Phillips was traded to the Reds in 2022 as part of the Eugenio Suarez deal. Phillips began last season at Double-A Chattanooga, striking out nearly 40 percent of the batters he faced across 14 starts. His strikeouts fell while his walks spiked upon his promotion to Triple-A Louisville, but regardless the organization deemed him worthy of a late-season audition with the big club. The results were poor during his brief time in Cincinnati (6.97 ERA, 1.50 WHIP over 20.2 innings), but he at least showed a respectable strikeout punch around all the walks and homers. While the right-hander has good velocity for a starter and his sweeper showed promise, he will likely need more time in the minors to refine his command and control. Phillips doesn't turn 23 years old until May.

Phillips could join the big-league bullpen amid Cincinnati's playoff push, writes Joe Trezza of MLB.com.
Analysis
Phillips' key appeal is generating a 9.7 K/9. Otherwise, the 22-year-old has struggled in Triple-A since ascending there midseason, posting a 4.69 ERA through 11 appearances. He's more likely to make his big-league debut in 2024.
