Jose Soriano

27-Year-Old PitcherSP
Toronto Blue Jays
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Soriano can be a frustrating guy for fantasy managers to roster. Between his premium velocity (97.2 mph with his sinker), elite groundball ability (100th percentile) and three secondary pitches with at least a 39.4 percent whiff rate, the ingredients are there for a frontline starter. Soriano has not pitched like a frontline guy, though, at least not consistently. Control issues have held Soriano back, as he had a 10.8 percent walk rate in 2025 and issued at least three free passes in 15 of his 31 starts. He also gives up more hard contact than you'd think a guy with his stuff would, as his hard-hit rate and average exit velocity both ranked in the fourth percentile. There's a non-zero chance Soriano puts it all together and becomes an ace, but to this point he's shown no indication he can do it consistently, and the Angels probably aren't the organization to coax it out of him. Inefficient in Jays debut
PToronto Blue Jays
August 8, 2026
Soriano didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis
The start of the game was delayed by two hours due to bad weather, and that combined with any nerves from debuting for a new team may have impacted Soriano's focus and efficiency. The right-hander tossed 62 of 94 pitches for strikes, and after a 1-2-3 first inning he dealt with traffic on the basepaths in every frame, including runners on second and third with nobody out in the fifth. Soriano rallied to fan Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner before being lifted, however. It wasn't the most impressive performance for Toronto's newest member of the rotation, but Soriano hasn't allowed more than three runs in six straight outings dating back to June 30, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:12 K:BB through 32.2 innings over that stretch. He'll look to provide more length in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Red Sox.

This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2021
After breaking into the majors as a reliever, Soriano pitched primarily out of the Angels' rotation last season, making 20 starts in 22 total appearances. He didn't lose anything in terms of velocity, but the strikeout dominance was predictably down as he moved back to a starting role. Arm fatigue put Soriano on the shelf in mid-August and the Angels shut him down for the year shortly thereafter, likely an easy call given where they were in the standings. An MRI in September came back clean, presumably setting him up for a normal offseason. Soriano relied more heavily on his sinker last season, which led to an increase in groundball rate to almost 60 percent. The 26-year-old also has a knuckle curve to get whiffs, so the potential is there for him to add back to his K rate and ascend to legitimate mid-rotation status.
Soriano emerged as a key piece of the Angels' bullpen after his first big league promotion last June. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a solid 3.64 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 56:23 K:BB over 42 innings. The Dominican native actually finished second on the team with 15 holds despite appearing in just 38 games. Soriano features four pitches, headlined by a curveball that he threw 41 percent of the time with great success. His sinker and fastball clocked in between 96 and 99 miles per hour, while his slider generated the 2nd-highest whiff rate in the league (62.5 percent) for that pitch type despite not throwing it often. With a 30 percent strikeout rate and 50-plus percent groundball rate, there's a lot to like in Soriano's profile, but he'll need to work on his control and limit his free passes (12.4 percent walk rate) to remain in the high-leverage mix.

Cubs showing interest
PLos Angeles Angels
July 24, 2026
The Cubs are among the teams interested in acquiring Soriano via trade before the Aug. 3 deadline, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Analysis
Soriano is under club control through 2028, making him one of the more attractive starters potentially available. The right-hander has battled inconsistency after a dominant start to the season, but he should have several teams interested in him. The Cubs have the prospect depth to put together a competitive package if the Angels decide to move him, and a deal could be centered around catching prospect Owen Ayers.
