Mason Miller

Mason Miller

25-Year-Old PitcherRP
Oakland Athletics
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The three most fantasy-relevant aspects of Miller's profile are his off-the-charts injury risk, his truly elite stuff and his team context: great home park, horrific run support. Of pitchers who will enter spring training healthy, it would be hard to find anyone more likely to get injured during spring training than Miller. A shoulder injury limited him to 30.2 innings (including the Arizona Fall League) as a 23-year-old in 2022 - his first full pro season. A UCL sprain limited him to 52.2 innings in 2023, and he has only topped 60 innings twice dating back to college, logging 67.2 innings in 2019 and 98.2 innings in 2021, in part because of a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. The fact he can touch 102 mph with his fastball only adds to the injury risk. He threw five-plus innings in three of his 17 appearances last year, and he didn't throw more than three innings in any of his 11 post-injury appearances. As scary as his durability track record is, his stuff is equally scary for opposing batters. In addition to his 80-grade fastball, he throws a mid-90s cutter, an upper-80s slider and a low-90s changeup. There are reports that the 25-year-old flamethrower could be used as a high-leverage reliever this year due to his durability issues, but this team is arguably the worst in baseball for pitcher wins and saves. Notches 15th save
POakland Athletics
July 11, 2024
Miller gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 15th save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
The flame-throwing righty bounced back from a shaky appearance in a non-save situation his last time out. Miller hasn't been quite as dominant of late as he was to begin the season, but he's still been very effective -- since the beginning of June he's posted a 2.84 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB through 12.2 innings while converting four of five save chances.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Oakland Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals & More MLB Best Bets & Expert Picks, June 20
30 days ago
Seth Lugo continues his surprisingly dominant campaign as the Kansas City Royals visit the Oakland A's, and Mike Barner presents the MLB Best Bets and Expert Picks for Thursday, June 20.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Miller touched triple digits in spring training 2022, but a subsequent shoulder strain sidelined him for the first five months of the season. The 6-foot-5 righty got healthy in time to generate buzz after returning (25:3 K:BB in 14 innings at the complex, High-A and Triple-A) and in the Arizona Fall League (20:4 K:BB in 16.2 innings). He now touches 102 mph with the heater while sitting in the upper-90s. Miller's slider, cutter and changeup (in that order) all show promise, so it's mostly a matter of him proving he can handle a starter's workload. The third-round pick from 2021 turns 25 in August and has logged 36.2 innings in pro ball (including the AFL). This season will be about building up his innings while refining his secondaries in the upper levels of the minors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Only moving for major trade package
POakland Athletics
June 20, 2024
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Athletics will likely only be willing to deal Miller this summer if they are "blown away" by the trade package.
ANALYSIS
Miller is one of the most electric arms in the game and has cemented himself as Oakland's closer with a 2.14 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 59:13 K:BB across 33.2 innings. He's averaging 100.9 mph on his fastball and has five years of team control after 2024. Miller's injury history and the general volatility of relievers could give contending teams pause given what it will take to acquire him, so there's certainly no guarantee he's traded this summer.
