Notches first MLB save
PAtlanta Braves
June 16, 2023
Tonkin picked up the save in Thursday's 8-3 win over the Rockies. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out six over 3.1 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Tonkin was dominant in relief Thursday to earn his first career save. He now sports a 3.21 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP and a 28:7 K:BB through 33.2 innings this season. While the 33-year-old Tonkin won't see any ninth-inning usage, he could work his way into a higher-leverage role with Atlanta while Jesse Chavez (lower leg) is on the IL.

Stat Review
How does Michael Tonkin compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Tonkin finally became a regular in the Minnesota bullpen last season after dominating at Triple-A and failing to stick in the majors the previous two years. Unfortunately, he struggled with the long ball as he allowed 12 home runs and had an ugly 5.02 ERA. However, there are some encouraging signs as he had a 10.1 K/9 and his long ball problems may have been due to a 16.0 percent HR/FB. He'll need to improve against left-handed batters as he allowed a 1.061 OPS to lefties, but Tonkin will attempt to stay in the majors and win a bullpen role again this spring.
Tonkin had another dominant season at Triple-A, but hasn't been able to find a consistent role in the majors. Tonkin had 46:5 K:BB ratio in 41 innings at Triple-A Rochester, but was up-and-down from the minors last season. His 94.3 mph average fastball resulted in a decent 7.3 K/9 in the majors but he was too wild with 3.5 BB/9. Tonkin should get every chance to win a bullpen role this spring and could find a high-profile setup role due to his velocity if he can reduce his free passes.
Tonkin has a chance to win a setup role this spring after a strong season at Triple-A and reassuring September callup. He struggled when called up to the majors in April and May (5.84 ERA and 9:6 K:BB ratio), but thrived at Triple-A with a 2.80 ERA and 9.2 K/9. When back in the majors in September he improved with a 2.70 ERA and seven strikeouts in seven innings with no walks. Tonkin features a mid-90s fastball that would be welcomed in a bullpen that has lacked velocity. He's also shown good control in the minors. Tonkin could quickly become one of the top setup men with the Twins in 2015 as a result.
Tonkin is a late bloomer who came on strong in the minors the past three seasons with outstanding strikeout rates and a mid-90s fastball. He began last season in Double-A, but aced his second trip to the level and then also posted a strong strikeout rate while showing good control at Triple-A. After he was called up in September he struck out 10 batters in 11.1 innings and did not give up an earned run until his ninth and final appearance with the Twins. Despite his fastball velocity (94.4 mph), Tonkin's age (24) could limit his upside, and he did give up five unearned runs with the Twins last year. Still, he could win a high-leverage role in Minnesota's bullpen with a strong spring.
