2026 Fantasy Outlook
Allen is a strong defensive shortstop, but his bat is simply too weak for anything but a bench role. He's a career .213/.265/.272 hitter across 382 MLB games and didn't register a single barrel in 416 plate appearances last year. Traded to Houston from Atlanta, he'll try to win a utility role this spring. Read Past Outlooks
Sitting Saturday
Allen isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game againts the Reds, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis
Allen will take a seat on the bench Saturday after going 2-for-9 with a run scored during his first three games back from the injured list. Braden Shewmake will start at shortstop and bat eighth while Allen rests.

How does Nick Allen compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Allen was the Athletics' Opening Day shortstop last season, but he had lost that job by the end of April and wound up spending the bulk of the year in the minors. Among 455 players to accrue at least 100 plate appearances, Allen ranked 449th with just a .463 OPS. He has just a .537 OPS since debuting in 2022, and that's easily the lowest mark in baseball among players to tally 500 trips to the plate. Atlanta liked Allen's glove enough to trade for him over the winter, and he could open the season on its bench, but the chances of the 26-year-old making a fantasy impact are virtually nil.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Time running out as starter
Robert Murray of FanSided.com speculates that shortstop prospect Darell Hernaiz could soon be called up by the A's, which could bring an end to Allen's run as the club's primary shortstop.
Analysis
Allen leads Oakland with 58 starts at shortstop this season and has started 24 of 29 games at the position since the All-Star break, but he sports a .204/.254/.282 slash line through 169 games in his big-league career. Hernaiz is one of the organization's top prospects and has a .945 OPS in 30 games since being promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas in mid-July, which could be enough for him to earn some starts in the majors down the stretch.
