Stat Review
How does Taylor Hearn compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

2019
The Rangers cycled through a number of traditional starters and primary pitchers out of the bullpen in 2021, with Hearn proving to be one of the more reliable options. He covered 104.1 innings in total over his 42 outings (11 starts), going 6-6 while producing a 4.66 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 92:42 K:BB. While those numbers aren't outstanding, Hearn at least appears to be penciled into a rotation spot to begin the 2022 season, which is enough to make him a draftable option in AL-only leagues.
Hearn missed out on an Opening Day roster spot in 2020, but he served as a late reliever for most of the season. He posted a solid 3.63 ERA over 14 appearances last year, and he had a 4.25 SIERA that suggested somewhat sustainable production. He displayed his above-average 95.0 mph average fastball velocity, and it translated to a 30.3 K% while he limited meaningful contact with a 4.9% barrel rate. While batters struggled to make hard contact on a regular basis, the southpaw posted an unimpressive 26.8 GB% that could pose problems over a larger sample. Hearn was in consideration for a back-end starting role, but he never entered the rotation during the shortened season. He could compete for a rotation spot once again, but he should also enter the year as one of the Rangers' top left-handed relief options. However, he's unlikely to pitch in many high-leverage situations, which hinders his fantasy value.
Hearn made 24 starts at the Double-A level in the Pirates' and Rangers' organizations. His ERA was nearly two runs lower in the Pirates' system, but his peripherals were very similar. For the season as a whole, he struck out 26.2% of opposing hitters while walking 8.8%, resulting in a 3.45 FIP that almost exactly matched his 3.49 ERA. If he maxes out, Hearn could be a mid-rotation starter with a repertoire that includes a fastball that can hit 97 mph and an above-average slider. Command and changeup development are questions for the lefty, however, as they are for so many young pitchers. A move to the bullpen could make him an interesting weapon as a classic fastball/slider high-leverage option. Hearn was added to the 40-man roster in November, so it's possible he debuts at some point later this year.
