2026 Fantasy Outlook
After a three-inning with San Francisco appearance to close the 2024 campaign, McDonald spent most of last season with Triple-A Sacramento before joining the Giants for the final two weeks. With the River Cats, his command and control slipped from prior levels, and he was hit particularly hard. McDonald leans heavily on a sinker and slider, while occasionally mixing in a four-seamer and changeup. He appeared three times for the Giants, starting twice and totaling 15 innings with 14 strikeouts and two walks. San Francisco has several options for the back end of the rotation, which could push McDonald toward a bullpen role. To secure a spot, he'll need to regain his command and control. He's best suited as a swingman, where he could be effective when starting at home. Read Past Outlooks
Pitches into seventh inning again
McDonald (2-0) allowed one run on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out five over 6.2 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Athletics.
Analysis
McDonald has shown the ability to provide length early in his stay in the majors, which could help him stick around even when Logan Webb (knee) is healthy, though that's not guaranteed. Through three starts with the Giants this season, McDonald has a 2.37 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 19 innings. His role could get some clarity in the near future with Webb eligible to be reinstated from the injured list next week.
