2025 Fantasy Outlook
After Ronald Acuna established the 40-50, 40-60 and 40-70 clubs in 2023, Ohtani created a new exclusive club of his own in 2024, becoming the first player in major-league history to reach 50 homers and 50 steals in a season. It will go down as one of the greatest fantasy campaigns of all time, and the fact that he was coming off September 2023 Tommy John surgery makes it all the more impressive. His play was not affected by a gambling scandal involving his former interpreter, as Ohtani led the league or was in the 99th percentile in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate, per Statcast. There is usually only one way for a player to go after a career year, and his return to pitching complicates things somewhat, but Ohtani is a once-in-a-lifetime talent and the unprecedented can be expected at this point. Even as a UT-only player coming off a torn labrum in his left shoulder suffered during the World Series that will delay his return to the mound a bit, Ohtani will likely be the first player off the board in many leagues in 2025. Hits 25-homer mark with two blasts
Ohtani went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs, two walks and three total runs scored in Saturday's 11-5 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Ohtani was off to a bit of a quiet start in June, going just 11-for-48 (.229) with four extra-base hits and a 4:14 BB:K over his first 12 games of the month. He got things back on track with a big performance Saturday, which included a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning as well as a second solo shot in the sixth. Ohtani leads the National League with 25 homers and is one behind Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh for the major-league lead. Ohtani has added a .290/.385/.638 slash line, 41 RBI, 71 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, 11 doubles and five triples across 69 contests.

How does Shohei Ohtani compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Ohtani's improbable 2023 season was sad on many fronts. Despite a second 40-20 season in three years along with his pitching prowess, he was not afforded the chance to play October baseball with his team breaking down as well as his right elbow for a second time in five years. Ohtani ended up having his elbow surgery in late September which rules him out for pitching in 2024. If he were to follow the Bryce Harper recovery timeline from a similar procedure, there is a decent chance Ohtani could still be ready for Opening Day. That said, it would be unfair to expect even this unique player to be 100% himself given what we just saw from Harper this past season as he attempted to regain his power stroke. Ohtani signed a unique 10-year pact with the Dodgers, guaranteeing himself an excellent home park for lefty power and superb teammates at the top of the lineup.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could pitch before All-Star break
The idea of Ohtani pitching in big-league games before the All-Star break hasn't been completely ruled out, according to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.
ANALYSIS
Ohtani threw his third live session against hitters Tuesday, and his 44 pitches across three simulated innings of work went so well that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts admitted that the organization hasn't completely ruled out the idea of Ohtani returning to the mound sooner than previously expected. That's a huge update compared to previous reports, as the idea of Ohtani pitching before the break wouldn't have been considered a couple of weeks ago.
