Is sports betting legal in Alabama?

Fact Checked By: Adam Zdroik

No. Sports betting is not legal in Alabama, but legislature was in the works as of 2020.

Alabama is hoping to build off the positivity set by the legalization of Daily Fantasy Sports in 2019. The proposed sports betting bill of 2020 would approve retail and online sportsbooks with a total of four licenses being offered from the newly created Alabama Sports Wagering Commission. Given the Coronavirus pandemic, discussions revolving around the bill were put on hold, which could mean legalization has to wait until 2021.

Despite having some of the stricter gaming laws in the country (state lottery is illegal), the signs are at least positive for sports betting legalization in Alabama.

At the least, Daily Fantasy Sports and horse racing betting are legal in Alabama. Fantasy sports were deemed illegal by the Attorney General in 2016, but a 2019 law overturned that opinion and legalized them. The law has a basic set of regulations, though unlike a lot of states, Alabama's minimum age limit is 19 years old.
