Sports betting is illegal in Louisiana despite numerous attempts to legalize it the last couple years.
The state has tried to pass through sports betting laws, but anything significant is unlikely to take place until 2021. Even if something gets through state legislation, each parish (64 total) would then have to approve the bill, which is another process.
The state attempted to get a couple bills passed the last few years with 2019 being the most recent when the House shot it down. The governor supports legalized sports betting, but until the House and Senate can agree on regulations, it won't get to the next stage.
Given the back-and-forth within the state, sports betting could be approved at some point in 2020, but even if it does, it won't be until 2021 that residents will be able to take advantage.
Unfortunately for residents, Louisiana is also one of the few states where Daily Fantasy Sports are illegal. While the majority of parishes approved fantasy sports in a 2019 referendum, a senator filibustered the bill at the last minute after House members removed amendments that would also allow sports betting. Including fantasy sports and sports betting in the same bill as a trick may not have been the best move and it could be another year or two before either are legalized.
Of note, horse racing betting is legal as well as action at casinos on tribal land, riverboat casinos and racinos (combined race track and casino).
