When will sports betting be legal in New York?

Sports betting at physical sportsbooks is legal in New York, however, online betting is not allowed. New York was one of the first states to legalize sports betting once the PASPA ruling passed the Senate in 2018 and wagering officially opened at sportsbooks July 2019

While online betting is illegal, that could change as soon as 2021 if New York Governor Andrew Cuomo can be persuaded to change his mind on the subject. Unfortunately, lawmakers were forced to push through a budget in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, which likely means it will be held off until later in the year. The biggest reason for mobile betting is that New York would receive a massive revenue boost compared to having sports betting only at retail sportsbooks.

As of 2020, New York had eight physical sportsbooks that were accepting action. Online betting isn't legal in New York, but operators like bet365 and FOX Bet have deals in place to open their mobile sportsbooks when/if that changes.

The future of Daily Fantasy Sports is also in question for the state after a ruling was upheld in February 2020 that it's considered "illegal gambling." Contests at DraftKings and FanDuel are legal for the time being, as the state is appealing the February ruling, but there isn't a guarantee DFS will be legal in a year.
