Sports betting is not legal in South Dakota, but residents will get a chance to decide if they want to change that in the November 2020 election. Both the House and Senate passed a sports betting bill and no matter what happens in the election, tribes will eventually have to get on board.
Lawmakers are still determining the specifics of what sports betting will look like in the state and even if it passes the November ballot, the earliest residents would be able to bet on sports is July 2021. Rules still have to be set by legislators and the governor's office, and due to the Coronavirus pandemic, that date could be pushed back further into the year.
Horse racing betting is legal and while the legality of fantasy sports has yet to be addressed, Daily Fantasy Sports are allowed in South Dakota.
