Sports betting is not legal in Virginia, but that is likely to change at some point in 2020. State legislature approved a sports betting bill March 8 and a signature by the governor is all that's needed to put it into effect, though the Coronavirus pandemic could delay things.
According to the legislation, sports betting would be allowed in person and online via the state lottery which is in charge of approving licenses. Of note, bettors would not be able to wager on Virginia college teams. Details should continue to emerge throughout 2020, assuming the governor signs the bill.
While those details are hammered out, sports fans can still take part in Daily Fantasy Sports, which were legalized in 2016. Horse racing betting is also legal and the state is home to one racetrack, Colonial Downs in New Kent.
