Taking points refers to the favorite in sports betting, which is the opposite of giving (laying) points.
For example, if you bet the Lions as a +6.5 point underdog against the Bears, it means you're "taking six points" from the other team, as in the Lions are starting the game up 6-0. So in order to win the game and the bet, the Lions need to win or tie the hypothetical game meaning if they don't score and the Bears score six points, the score would be 6-6. In the real game, it would be 6-0, which also means they cover the +6.5 point spread as an underdog.
Since people use different phrases across the country, it's worth remembering "taking points" and "receiving points" are the same thing.
