Analysis
The Pirates designated Rainey for assignment June 2, and he elected free agency after clearing waivers two days later. After less than a week on the open market, Rainey has decided to return to the Pirates on a minor-league deal, though he'll no longer possess a 40-man roster spot. The veteran reliever had posted a 10.57 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 7.2 innings at the big-league level this season.
