Training Camp Notes: CJ2K Is Back...Do We Care?

Chris Johnson, the artist formerly known as CJ2K, has finally landed with a team desperate enough to sign him. The former fantasy star has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cardinals and figures to slide in right behind Andre Ellington on the depth chart. Arizona's RB depth has been a weakness in camp, as rookie David Johnson can't seem to get on the field and the tandem of Kerwynn Williams and Stepfan Taylor has proven to be sub-par at best. And with Ellington's injury history there is a good chance Johnson is going to get some burn behind what should be an improved Cardinals' offensive line. The only real issue with Johnson is that he's not very good anymore and is a far cry from the stud who ran for 2,006 yards over five years ago. The soon to be 30-year-old is certainly worth a flier in deeper leagues, but the chance of him having real fantasy relevance this season is slim. Lastly, I would be remiss for not giving CJ2K credit for coming back from an off-season gun shot wound to make it back on the field; you don't see that everyday.

  • Adrian Peterson was a partial participant in Monday's practice as he continues to recover from the thigh injury he suffered last Tuesday. This doesn't seem like much to worry about, as Minnesota has already declared that Peterson will not play a preseason snap, so he should have more than enough time to make sure his thigh is good to go. However, it will be interesting to finally see Peterson back out on the field for the first time after a year away. He is rightfully a high first-round pick due to his potential and the chance that he comes back with incredibly fresh legs; but I still worry about taking him over some of the other "safer" guys at the top of draft like Lacy or Bell. Peterson's upside is sky high, but he comes with a fair amount of risk as well.
  • Emmanuel Sanders is having trouble getting back from a sore hamstring that has hampered him over the past couple weeks. The Broncos have announced that he will sit out of practice for a few more days. While Denver will clearly be careful with Sanders' recovery, hamstring injuries can linger and are especially worrisome for guys like Sanders who rely on speed and shiftiness for success. Keep an eye on the situation to see how it develops.
  • Sammy Watkins left practice Monday with glute soreness. Which sounds painful. Watkins had hip surgery in the offseason, so he is probably still working his way back from that; but it is still reason for concern. The second-year receiver has a lot of talent, but will be saddled with a bad QB no matter who Buffalo chooses to start, and is still not back to full health. Be careful about reaching for his talent when the other factors to his success raise so many red flags.
  • Alshon Jeffrey has not returned to practice as he is still recovering from what the team is calling a "minor calf injury". It's possible the Bears are bringing Jeffrey along gingerly, but it would still be nice to see him get back on the field as this injury has lingered longer than expected. With Kevin White out for an indefinite amount of time, Chicago will need a healthy Jeffrey in a big way. Assuming he can stay on the field, Jeffrey has the chance to be top tier wide receiver this season.
  • Conversely, there is a Bears wide receiver who is making headlines for his play on the field instead of his injury issues off it. Eddie Royal has been one of the bright spots in Bears' camp accoring to a Chicago Sun-Times report. Royal obviously has a history with Jay Cutler and the two seem to be working well together. Plus, due to the injury to White, Royal should see the field a lot as he can play both in the slot and on the outside. Royal could be a really nice late-round value in fantasy drafts this year.
  • I'll leave you with this: Robert Griffin III said in an interview that he thinks he's the best quarterback in the league and he just has to go out and prove it. Not sure if he really believes that, but thought it would be a nice way to end this post with a chuckle. Keep dreaming Robert, keep dreaming.
