Signs on with FIU
June 23, 2020
Bortenschlager committed to Florida International on Tuesday, joining the program as a graduate transfer from Maryland, Eric Henry of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bortenschlager will be able to compete right away as a fifth-year redshirt junior for Florida International, which lost two-year starting quarterback James Morgan following the 2019 season. The Panthers don't have an obvious succession plan for Morgan, so Bortenschlager should receive ample opportunity in training camp to compete for the top job with Kaylan Wiggins, who offers more of a rushing threat but is less developed as a passer. During his four years at Maryland, Bortenschlager -- who took a redshirt in 2016 and qualified for a medical redshirt in 2019 -- made nine starts in total and completed 51.5 percent of his passes for 5.7 yards per attempt and an 11:5 TD:INT while adding two scores on the ground.
