Misses extra point Sunday
KIndianapolis Colts
October 19, 2025
Badgley went 1-for-1 on field-goal tries and 3-for-4 on extra-point attempts in Sunday's 38-24 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
The kicker's miss came after Indianapolis scored on its first drive of the game. After that, he did make every kick, including a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter that put the Colts up by 20. In two games since replacing the injured Spencer Shrader (knee), who is out for the season, Badgley is 2-for-2 on field-goal tries and 7-for-8 on extra-point attempts, which should be good enough to help him keep the job for another week.

Badgley was the Chargers' kicker from 2018 to 2020, then bounced around to four different teams in 2021 and 2022, eventually landing in Detroit where he subsequently spent most of 2023 on the practice squad. He finally got another chance late in 2023, replacing a struggling Riley Patterson in Week 15 and making all seven of his field-goal attempts (plus 24 of 26 PATs) across four regular-season games and three playoff appearances. Badgley looked like the favorite to handle Detroit's kicking work heading into training camp, but he then suffered a season-ending hamstring tear during the first week of summer practice. He'll focus on rehab this fall and hope to bounce back in 2025.
Badgley had a nice run as the Chargers' placekicker in 2018 and 2019 before a poor 2020 sent him on a journey from Indianapolis to Tennessee to Chicago to Detroit. It was at the last destination where he thrived, and he re-signed this offseason after going 20-for-24 on field-goal tries and 33-for-33 on PATs in 12 games last year. However, the Lions cut him a few months later, electing instead for a battle between Riley Patterson and John Parker Romo. Badgley's career FG conversion rate of 81.7 percent screams mediocre -- and his 5-of-13 record from 50-plus yards worse than that -- but he's on track to enter Week 1 as the Titans' kicker after signing with them Aug. 22.
Badgley missed only five kicks in 18 games between 2018 and 2019, but he took a sharp downward turn in 2020 with an NFL-high nine missed FGs. Even with 19 of his 33 tries covering 40 or more yards, Badgley's 72.7 percent conversion rate was unacceptable by modern standards. He then lost a summer job competition to Tristan Vizcaino, with the Chargers placing Badgley on waivers at the end of the preseason.
Badgley's emergence in 2018 appeared to solve the Chargers' infamous kicking woes, but the team's problems returned in 2019 when he missed the first two months of the season with a groin injury. Badgley came back in November and stabilized the situation, likely doing enough to lock down the job for this year. The offense is now the big concern, with Philip Rivers gone and the line still looking shaky.
Badgley ended the Chargers' kicking curse last year, but his fantasy output (7.9 ppg) was modest as the team ranked 10th in red-zone TD percentage (64.2). The Chargers finished 11th in yards and sixth in points but only 17th in FG attempts - partially a product of not trusting Caleb Sturgis, whom Badgley replaced for good after Week 9. Badgley might still be on a short leash, but the Chargers will score plenty of points.

Team adds big-legged kicker
KDetroit Lions
June 16, 2024
Badgley faces additional competition for a roster spot, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that kicker Jake Bates signed a two-year contract with the Lions on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Bates has been impressive kicking in the UFL, where his first kick was a game-winning 64-yard field goal. He has made three kicks of 60-plus yards and 17 of 22 field-goal attempts overall. Badgley made all four of his field-goal attempts in four games with the Lions in 2023 but missed two of 15 PAT tries. Bates' bigger leg could give the newcomer the advantage in a kicking competition that may not be decided until after the preseason.
