2019 Fantasy Outlook
Expectations were low for Herndon's rookie season last year, coming out of Miami as a fourth-round pick who was overshadowed by David Njoku for much of his college career. But Herndon's debut campaign was a definite hit, as he quickly took over the starting job in New York and outproduced a slew of rookie tight ends who were drafted before him. Among tight ends with at least 30 receptions, Herndon was seventh in yards per target at 9.0 and fourth in average depth of target at 10.0, proving to be far more than a dump-off specialist for Sam Darnold. New head coach Adam Gase has been effusive with praise for Herndon this offseason, and it's not like the Jets are overloaded with sure things at any of the wide receiver spots. Someone is going to grow into the team's most dynamic target for Darnold; why not the 6-4, 253, Herndon? We are still not sure what will become of Herndon's DWI charge from last summer - the league office is expected to evaluate Herndon's situation before the season starts - but he has a chance to become an impact player in his second season even if he is banned for a few games. Appealing four-game suspension
TENew York Jets
July 12, 2019
Herndon will appeal his four-game suspension, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
Reports earlier this summer suggested the tight end likely would face a two-game suspension after pleading guilty to a DWI charge from last summer. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the league decided on four games instead of two because a woman at the scene of the car accident claimed bodily harm caused by the crash. Herndon presumably hopes to have the length of his suspension reduced to two or three games.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Herndon may well find himself contributing right away for a Jets team that let starting 2017 tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins walk in free agency. The rookie fourth-rounder out of Miami could have perhaps gone even higher on draft day if not for a late-season MCL tear that prevented him from strutting his stuff at the combine. Herndon is back at full health and has been participating in OTAs without any limitations, so look for the pass-catching tight end to compete for the starting gig with the likes of Clive Walford, Jordan Leggett and Eric Tomlinson.
