Throwing for NFL teams
Newton will throw in front of NFL teams at Auburn's Pro Day on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Newton, who did not suit up for NFL action in 2022 and finished the 2021 season as Carolina's backup quarterback, will audition his talents for another opportunity in the league. A free agent turning 34 in May, it's possible Newton could still garner some interest as a veteran No. 2 option and mentor. That would likely depend on what sort of contract Newton desires, but he at least believes he has enough left in the tank to continue contributing on the field.

Newton looked more like a running back than a quarterback last season. With 12 rushing TDs, he nearly matched his own NFL record (14 in 2011) for most by a QB, as he had more rushing attempts (42) than passing attempts (36) in the red zone. He threw more INTs (10) than TD passes (8) and averaged an NFL-low 171.1 passing yards per game. Newton did not have a good supporting cast, especially when it came to stretching the field. He ranked third in the league with a 64.3 on-target percentage on attempts of 20-pus yards but only went downfield on 7.6 percent of his attempts (32nd) as his aDOT was 7.2 yards (29th). And now Newton finds himself looking for a job on the eve of the season, after losing both a camp battle to Mac Jones and his roster spot this summer. The Patriots will move forward with their first-round pick, while Newton becomes a free agent again.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Unlikely to play for Jets
In an appearance Thursday on "RG3 and the Ones," Newton relayed that he wasn't interested in signing with the Jets to serve in a backup role behind Zach Wilson, Ian Casselberry of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Since Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1 against the Bills, plenty of quarterbacks have been rumored to join Gang Green including Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz and Chad Henne. While Newton hasn't played in the NFL since 2021 -- when he played eight games for the Panthers and started in five -- and hasn't been rumored as an option for the Jets, he stated in his appearance that a deal of $5.5 million wouldn't be enough for him to join New York. A deal worth that much would put him alongside Tyrod Taylor and Jacoby Brissett as one of the top-paid backup quarterbacks in the league, so it appears as though Newton is either seeking a top salary deal or looking to start for a team this season.
