Jaret Patterson

23-Year-Old Running BackRB
Washington Commanders
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Patterson was active for all 17 games as a rookie UDFA in 2021 and made one start, but he then logged only three appearances for the Commanders last season and was limited to 17 carries. He piled up 3,884 rushing yards and 53 total touchdowns in three collegiate campaigns at Buffalo prior to that, but at 5-8, 195 pounds with 4.59 speed, he may never get a similar chance in the NFL. The Commanders added rookie sixth-round pick Chris Rodriguez to a backfield that already has Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson, putting Patterson on the roster bubble again this summer. ANALYSIS
Brian Robinson (knee) was inactive for the Commanders' season finale, so Patterson found himself as the primary option in the team's backfield after not getting a touch through the first 17 weeks, and he used the opportunity to establish a new career high in rushing yards for the game. Robinson's strong second half all but ensures he'll be the team's top RB in 2023, but if Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) gets moved in the offseason, Patterson could enter next season in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, giving the 2021 undrafted free agent some possible deep-league fantasy intrigue.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
Patterson caught on with Washington as an undrafted rookie last year, following a prolific college career at Buffalo (3,884 rushing yards, 53 total touchdowns). He eventually became Antonio Gibson's backup on early downs and later had 98 total yards and a TD in a Week 17 start against Philadelphia. Unfortunately for Patterson, the Commanders just spent a third-round pick on Brian Robinson, who was the lead back at Alabama last year. The two figure to compete for reserve work on early downs, while J.D. McKissic continues to replace Gibson in certain passing situations.
Patterson topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his three seasons at Buffalo, including a six-game, pandemic-shortened campaign in 2020. Still, he went undrafted this past spring, despite having more than a few fans in the prospect/fantasy community. NFL GMs apparently were less impressed, likely noting Patterson's small frame (5-6, 195) and lack of collegiate receiving production (zero receptions last year). However, going undrafted worked in Patterson's favor, as he quickly signed with a Washington team that was weak in the backfield behind Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. After putting up 180 total yards in the preseason, Patterson had a spot on the initial 53-man roster, while veteran back Peyton Barber was released. The undrafted rookie thus starts his NFL career as Washington's No. 3 running back.
