2025 Fantasy Outlook
Blomqvist got his first look in the NHL in 2024-25, but the Penguins' poor defense and his own struggles adjusting to the league left a poor impression. The 23-year-old went 4-9-1 with a 3.81 GAA and a .885 save percentage over 15 appearances in the NHL. He was better with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, posting a 2.84 GAA and a .914 save percentage over 18 games. Blomqvist may not be fully NHL ready yet, but if he can have a good training camp, he may be able to bump Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic off the Penguins' roster, or at least force the team to carry three goalies for a spell. At age 23, Blomqvist still has plenty of time to improve, so keep an eye on how things are trending heading into Opening Night. Read Past Outlooks

Recovers from injury
Blomqvist, who is playing for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, has recovered from his undisclosed injury, Tony Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey reports Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Blomqvist has a 2.93 GAA and a .910 save percentage in 15 outings with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2024-25. He also has a 4-9-1 record, 3.81 GAA and .885 save percentage across 15 appearances with Pittsburgh. Unless Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic sustains an injury, Blomqvist will probably spend the rest of the campaign in the minors.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
The 2024-25 campaign was expected to be another year in the minors for Blomqvist, despite the fact that he went an impressive 25-12-6 with a 2.16 GAA and .921 save percentage in 45 games for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Those plans changed when backup netminder Alex Nedeljkovic suffered a lower-body injury during training camp. Now, the 22-year-old Blomqvist will start the year with the NHL club and will likely feature right away thanks to a season-opening back-to-back for Pittsburgh. Still, once Nedlejkovic is cleared to return, Blomqvist figures to be re-assigned to the minors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

In line to start Saturday
Blomqvist is likely to get the starting nod against Washington on the road Saturday after head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, "I don't think I'm setting him up for success if I just throw him in there tonight. Joel's gonna play games for us," per Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site.
ANALYSIS
Blomqvist will likely be given every opportunity to steal the starting job away from Alex Nedeljkovic, who inherited it by default after Tristan Jarry was sent down to the minors Thursday. Still, the Pens won't want to simply throw Blomqvist to the wolves, as he figures to be their long-term solution between the pipes at this point.
