2025 Fantasy Outlook
It's safe to assume, after a successful stint with AHL San Jose (11-9-1 record, 2.45 GAA and .923 save percentage), that Askarov will be in the NHL for 2025-26. Whether that's as a starter, a backup or a tandem goalie remains to be seen, though it shouldn't be long before that's not a question anymore. Askarov is the team's goalie of the future, and it won't be long before he's the clear starter leading the team's youth movement. Don't put too much weight on his NHL numbers from last year, as a 3.10 GAA and a .896 save percentage behind such an inexperienced team wasn't bad. Askarov will be a factor in fantasy, but his value will be determined by how much of a step forward the Sharks take as a unit. Read Past Outlooks

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Askarov is the best goaltending prospect in pro hockey and his time will come, which could be in 2024-25 after he was acquired by the Sharks in a trade from Nashville. He has it all - elite skills, incredible feet and extraordinary quickness and athleticism. It certainly wasn't the backstop's skills that saw him shipped off the San Jose. The Preds are a team with cup aspirations and signed starter Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension. Askarov could be in contention for the starting job alongside Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. It likely will take most of training camp for a decision to be made, so Askarov may need to be on your draft radar.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Should start Thursday
Askarov is expected to be between the pipes versus Nashville on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Askarov was selected 11th overall in the 2020 Draft by the Predators and dealt to San Jose in the offseason for David Edstrom, Magnus Chrona and a conditional first-round pick in 2025. This will be his first game against his former teammates. Askarov has been strong at the NHL level this season in limited action, going 3-4-2 with a 2.57 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He should be the No. 1 goaltender with the Sharks as Alexandar Georgiev is only 2-9-0 with a 3.79 GAA and an .884 save percentage since he was dealt from Colorado on Dec. 9.
