Jonas Siegenthaler

Jonas Siegenthaler

27-Year-Old DefensemanD
New Jersey Devils
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Siegenthaler missed more than a month in the middle of the season with a broken foot and then suffered a concussion after being hit by Matt Rempe of the Rangers in a mid-March matchup. All told, Siegenthaler appeared in 57 games, managing a single goal and nine points. He's never offered much in the way of offensive production and his hit and block totals are mediocre for a defenseman, but Siegenthaler has fit in very nicely alongside Dougie Hamilton on New Jersey's top defensive pair. With Hamilton presumably back to full strength for this coming season, the partnership figures to continue for the 2024-25 campaign. Read Past Outlooks

Slated to play

April 29, 2025
Siegenthaler (undisclosed) is expected to play in Tuesday's Game 5 versus the Hurricanes, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Siegenthaler is still not 100 percent after missing time with a long-term lower-body injury, but he appears to be good enough to play. He entered Tuesday as a game-time decision. Siegenthaler warmed up in a second-pairing role and will be tasked with tough defensive minutes.

Siegenthaler was quietly a key piece of the New Jersey turnaround in 2022-23. He appeared in 80 of 82 games for the club, setting new career-best marks in goals (four), points (21), plus-minus (plus-27), hits (101), and blocked shots (151). He was unfairly scratched for Game 2 of their first-round playoff series with the Rangers, but head coach Lindy Ruff saw the error of his ways and got Siegenthaler right back in there for Game 3 of what was an eventual seven-game New Jersey victory. There's zero upside here from a fantasy standpoint, but the Swiss native is an underrated real-life player.
With No. 1 defender Dougie Hamilton injured for much of his debut season with the Devils in 2021-22, Siegenthaler stepped up in a major way. His offensive production -- one goal, 14 points in 70 games -- was minimal, but Siegethaler was one of the few Devils that exceeded expectations. The club was so impressed with his performance that it inked the 25-year-old to a new five-year, $17 million contract this summer. It's a deal which should ensure that Siegenthaler retains a top-four role with the team for years to come, although he can be ignored in most fantasy formats.
Siegenthaler enjoyed a more consistent role in 2019-20, which allowed him to accumulate nine points and a plus-11 rating in 64 contests. The Swiss defenseman added 105 blocked shots to his ledger -- he's a shutdown guy through and through. With the addition of Zdeno Chara to the left side of the Capitals' blue line, Siegenthaler will have a harder time getting on the ice in 2020-21. He could be a frequent healthy scratch this season when the defense corps is fully healthy, although there's a chance Siegenthalter could outplay Chara and split the role between the two players. Either way, Siegenthaler is unlikely to do enough offensively to warrant a fantasy roster spot.
After plying his trade in the minors for the last two seasons, Siegenthaler finally got a taste of the NHL ranks in 2018-19. Despite posting just four assists and a plus-6 rating in 26 games, the Swiss defender's game improved significantly as the season wore on, earning him four playoff appearances during Washington's short Stanley Cup defense. The 6-foot-3 defender appears poised to stick in the NHL ranks in 2019-20, but stiff competition for ice time and a lack of offensive upside make him irrelevant in the fantasy arena.

Could return Friday
DNew Jersey Devils
April 25, 2025
Siegenthaler, who has been sidelined with a long-term lower-body injury, may be ready to play in Friday's Game 3 clash with Carolina, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Siegenthaler was not originally expected back during the first round, but appears to be trending in the right direction. In order to suit up in Game 3, the 27-year-old defenseman will need to be activated off long-term injured reserve. Still, Brett Pesce has been taking the morning skates off for maintenance, so it's possible Siegenthaler is just a placeholder.
