Not expected at camp
Gardiner (hip) won't be in attendance for training camp and is slated to start another year on long-term injured reserve, Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
ANALYSIS
This latest news refutes an earlier report that Gardiner was fit and available for the upcoming season. The fact that the blueliner won't be available seems to explain the club's decision to bring in Calvin de Haan on a professional tryout agreement. Considering Gardiner already spent last season on LTIR, this would seem to be the end of the Minnesota native's playing career.

Gardiner's scoring production continued to decline last season, as he went from 30 points in 62 games with the Maple Leafs in 2018-19 to just 24 points in 68 games with the Hurricanes a year ago. Some of that decline can be attributed to the 30-year-old American's plummeting usage, as he posted the lowest average ice time of his career (16:40 per contest) in 2019-20. It's clear that Carolina's coaching staff doesn't have much faith in Gardiner's abilities as a defender, so he'll continue to see limited ice time while skating in the team's bottom four, but he should also continue to have a significant role on the Canes' power play - he notched 11 points with the man advantage last campaign. Still, Gardiner won't be a viable fantasy option in all but the deepest of fantasy formats in 2020-21.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Will go on LTIR
Gardiner will get hip surgery and go on LTIR, according to Hurricanes GM Don Waddell, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
ANALYSIS
Carolina's taking a page out of Tampa Bay's playbook by circumventing salary cap rules with a conveniently timed hip surgery to a pricey player. The Hurricanes are over the salary cap after bringing in Jesperi Kotkaniemi via offer sheet, but getting Gardiner's $4.05 million cap hit off the books will make Carolina cap compliant again. Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov sat out the whole 2020-21 regular season before miraculously reaching full strength just as the playoffs began, but it remains to be seen whether Gardiner's recovery timeline will also happen to coincide exactly with the end of the regular season.
