On waivers for buyout
Brodie was placed on unconditional waivers by the Blackhawks on Saturday for the purpose of a contract buyout, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
If Brodie clears waivers, the Blackhawks will officially buy out the last year of his contract, and he will become an unrestricted free agent. The 35-year-old had two goals and eight assists in 54 appearances before being a healthy scratch for the final 22 games of the 2024-25 regular season. He is too expensive to be spending $3.75 million on, especially with all of the young defensemen Chicago can utilize in 2025-26. Brodie is just a year removed from a 26-point campaign, but considering his age, he will likely be not much more than a depth add for a team in free agency.

Brodie signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with Chicago in July after spending the past four seasons in Toronto. The 34-year-old rearguard notched one goal and 25 assists over 78 contests in 2023-24. He also led the team with 159 blocked shots. Brodie didn't light the lamp until the Maple Leafs' regular-season finale versus Tampa Bay. He doesn't record many shots on goal and hasn't been much of an offensive contributor since topping 40 points twice with Calgary in 2014-15 and 2015-16. If he occupies more of a depth role for the Blackhawks, Brodie's block total could suffer in 2024-25.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely headed for buyout
Brodie, who hasn't played since March 1 versus the Ducks, could have his contract bought out this offseason, per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
After this season, Brodie has one year remaining on his contract at $3.75 million AAV, but the Hawks wouldn't actually save that much given the structure of his contract, which is mostly signing bonus. Even when the blueliner has played, he has struggled to offer much in the way of fantasy value with just 10 points in 54 contests.
