Wolanin was placed on waivers Tuesday for the purpose of assignment to AHL Abbotsford.
ANALYSIS
Wolanin will return to Abbotsford where he has been highly productive -- he's produced 84 points in 91 games there over the course of the last two campaigns. The left-shot defenseman hasn't made an appearance in the NHL since the 2022-23 campaign with Vancouver.

Wolanin spent the entire 2023-24 season with AHL Abbotsford after passing through waivers at the start of the season. Wolanin managed five goals and 29 points in 42 regular-season games, and added two goals and an assist in six postseason appearances. He will attempt to make the Canucks out of training camp as their seventh defenseman, but he is in tough, as he will have to beat out Mark Friedman and Noah Juulsen for the role. Even if he is able to make the final roster, there is no reason to add Wolanin to your fantasy roster.
Wolanin will be in the mix for a spot on the Opening Night roster in 2020-21, but that's not due to his scoring -- he had no points in three games with the Senators last year and just one goal in nine outings with AHL Belleville. A shoulder injury cost the 25-year-old nearly six months of action, so he'll be looking to make up for lost time. Wolanin's primary competition for playing time will be Braydon Coburn, who was acquired via a trade with the Lightning. That duo could end up splitting time this season, although it seems more likely that Wolanin will get the short end of the timeshare. Fantasy managers can safely overlook the Quebec native, as a sudden surge of offense is unlikely.
With the arrival of Nikita Zaitsev and Ron Hainsey this offseason, there may not be a spot in the top six for Wolanin in 2019-20. Last year, the 24-year-old appeared in 30 games with the Senators, scoring four goals and 12 points while posting a plus-3 rating. However, since they're still in the early stages of a rebuild, Ottawa is probably going to want another look at the 24-year-old defenseman sooner rather than later. The 2015 fourth-round pick racked up seven goals and 31 points in 40 AHL contests last campaign, putting his offensive upside on full display. Wolanin may not be worth a draft pick in most fantasy formats this year, but if he's able to earn an extended stay with the big club at any point during the upcoming campaign, he'll be worth a speculative waiver claim.
Wolanin had a solid debut when the Senators brought him up from the University of North Dakota, scoring three points in 10 games last year. With Ottawa going for youth at this point, Wolanin could get an early opportunity. The 23-year-old looks as though he could develop into a solid player for the Senators for several years to come -- his 35-point season with UND suggests offensive upside. However, there is no guarantee Wolanin starts the year in the NHL and even if he does he's essentially a rookie at this point. Snap him up in dynasty leagues if you can, but temper expectations in the short term.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might be recalled soon
DVancouver Canucks  Free Agent
November 30, 2023
Wolanin, who is currently with AHL Abbotsford, will return from an undisclosed injury this weekend and could be called up by Vancouver soon, coach Rick Tocchet told Jeff Paterson of The Hockey News on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Wolanin hasn't played for Vancouver yet in 2023-24, but the 28-year-old does have six goals and 23 points in 86 career NHL games. With Abbotsford this season, he's contributed two goals and 14 points in 13 contests. If the Canucks call him up, it would likely be to serve as a bottom-pairing defender.
