Bemstrom will not be qualified by the Penguins on Monday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports, making him an unrestricted free agent.
ANALYSIS
Bemstrom saw action in 14 NHL games this past season in which he garnered just one assist, 13 shots and 12 hits while averaging 8:20 of ice time. Given his limited NHL opportunities last year, it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the Pens going in a different direction. The 26-year-old center will be free to sign with any NHL club when free agency opens Tuesday.

Following his trade to Pittsburgh, Bemstrom saw action in 24 games for the Penguins in which he generated three goals, two assists and 34 shots on net while averaging a meager 8:47 of ice time. Initially, it looked like the organization was going to let the forward walk in free agency when it didn't offer him a qualifying offer, but the two sides came back to the table and agreed to a one-year, $775,000 contract. Even with a full preseason to work with his teammates, Bemstrom is far from a lock to make the Opening Night roster and could spend some time in the minors with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. When Bemstrom does suit up, it figures to be almost exclusively in a bottom-six role.
Bemstrom has been a part-time player for Columbus for three straight years. His final stat line last year was seven goals and 22 points in 55 games. On a more positive note, Bemstrom dominated the AHL (14 goals, 31 points in 21 games) during his time there. Still just 24 years of age, Bemstrom is in a tough spot moving forward. He needs top-six playing time, particularly with the man advantage, to be effective and Columbus doesn't seem able to offer that at the moment. Perhaps Bemstrom is a change-of-scene candidate in a trade. Until then, he's a pass in fantasy circles.
A fourth-round pick in 2017, Bemstrom made his NHL debut last season and showed some occasional flashes of upside, finishing with 10 goals and 20 points in 56 games, with about half his production (five goals, eight points) coming on the power play. The 21-year-old is an asset on the attack thanks to his speed, ability to find open ice, and a quick release on his shot, and while he lacks ideal size he's a willing back-checker as well. The Jackets already have two wingers with that profile in Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand, however, which could lock Bemstrom out of a consistent top-six role even if he takes a step forward in his development in 2020-21.
Snagged in the fourth round in 2017, Bemstrom will get his first taste of North American hockey this season after an outstanding showing last year, when he led the SHL with 23 goals in 47 games as a 19-year-old. The list of teenagers who have put up numbers like that in Sweden's top league is short and impressive, and includes the likes of Peter Forsberg and Elias Pettersson, but Bemstrom's upside probably isn't that high. His skills make him a potentially better version of Oliver Bjorkstrand, as he uses his plus speed and strong skating to find open ice and then uses a quick trigger to beat the goalie. A good campaign in Sweden this year could set him up for a regular shift with Columbus in 2020-21.

Bemstrom's gear was in the locker room ahead of Thursday's matchup with the Flyers, Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports, indicating he was recalled from the minors.
ANALYSIS
Bemstrom has appeared in just two NHL games for the Penguins this year, during which he logged 12:14 of ice time per game while generating zero points, two shots and a minus-1 rating. It will likely come down to Bemstrom or Bokondji Imama for one spot in the lineup against Philadelphia on Thursday.
