2024 Fantasy Outlook

Wallstedt is one of the top goaltending prospects in pro hockey, and his time could be fast approaching. His consistency has sometimes been criticized as robotic, and he doesn't have Yaroslav Askarov's acrobatic athleticism, but fantasy managers will take strong and steady any day of the week. While Minnesota's Filip Gustavsson struggled in the NHL, Wallstedt had a terrific season behind a weak Iowa squad in the AHL. His .910 save percentage was top 20 overall for a team that finished among the league's worst. It would be a huge step for Wallstedt to start in the NHL, but he could end up splitting time with Marc-Andre Fleury if Gustavsson gets traded. Wallstedt was recalled Tuesday and returned to the minors after being a healthy scratch in Minnesota's 3-2 overtime win against Vancouver. His brief stint in the NHL might have just been for developmental purposes to give him a chance to work with the big club, especially because Iowa is off until Saturday anyway. The 22-year-old has a 4.34 GAA and an .860 save percentage in 10 outings with Iowa in 2024-25.

Wallstedt is expected to defend the visiting crease in Winnipeg on Sunday, according to Jessi Pierce of NHL.com.

ANALYSIS
Wallstedt is part of a three-goaltender rotation in Minnesota this season, along with Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury. Gustavsson got the call Opening Night on Thursday, while Fleury is expected to play at home Saturday against the Kraken. That leaves Sunday's tilt in Winnipeg for Wallstedt to make his season debut. Wallstedt is considered the Wild's goaltender of the future and playing with the veteran Fleury all season can only help his career.
