Tucker Poolman

Ongoing long-term head trauma has limited Poolman to a full season's worth of games over the last three years, during which he's produced just five points to go with 124 blocked shots and 104 hits. At this stage, it's fair to question whether he should continue his career -- if he does, he'll likely be playing limited minutes on the third pairing for the Canucks, though he's far from a lock to be in an everyday role. There's been no update on Poolman's status over the offseason after he was officially shut down in January.

A reliable defender, Poolman also had 16 points in 57 appearances with the Jets in his first full NHL season in 2019-20. He added 58 hits and 59 blocked shots, providing modest value outside of the scoring categories. With a remodeled blue line in Winnipeg, Poolman will most likely slot in on the top pairing alongside Josh Morrissey for the upcoming season. Given his style of play, Poolman is more of a defensive option, so there's not a whole lot to like here from a fantasy standpoint. There will, however, be plenty of chances for him to make an impact with lots of ice time coming his way.

The University of North Dakota has a superb track record of producing NHL-caliber players. Most notably, Jonathan Toews -- one of the most accomplished forwards in the history of the Blackhawks franchise -- is a UND alumnus. While the Fighting Hawks have yet to breed an elite NHL defensemen, Poolman added 20 goals, 52 assists and an immaculate plus-40 rating for that school over a three-year span and was even named 2017 NCHC Best Defensive Defenseman. Last season, he turned pro and split time between the Jets and AHL Manitoba. Poolman seemed more comfortable in the minors, though he amassed 20 hits and 18 blocked shots to compensate for his recording a mere two points over 24 games at the highest level. The Jets inked the 25-year-old to a three-year, $2.325 million extension in late July as a clear sign that they're committed to his development.
