Past Fantasy Outlooks
The former No. 13 overall pick by Dallas in 2018, Dellandrea was never able to find a consistent role over parts of four seasons with the Stars. He appeared in just 42 regular-season contests last year, managing two goals and nine points. Dallas decided to end the experiment in June, trading Dellandrea to San Jose in exchange for a 2025 fourth-rounder. Still just 24 years of age, Dellandrea should be in good shape in terms of earning a full-time role with his new club, but the odds of it leading to any sort of fantasy value would appear to be astronomical.
Dellandrea established himself as a full-time NHL player last year with 28 points, 92 shots on net, 125 hits and 54 PIM in 82 contests. A first-round pick from 2018, Dellandrea played on the wing in a middle-six role and evolved into a solid penalty-killer, though he saw little power-play time. He may not have the same star power as some other young forwards on the roster, but there's no questioning his place in the lineup now. Dellandrea should see a similar role in 2023-24, though perhaps with more power-play usage if the Stars have worse injury luck. He should be able to top 30 points, but he probably won't be selected in most fantasy drafts this fall.
Dellandrea spent all of 2019-20 campaign with OHL Flint, racking up 32 goals and 70 points in 47 contests. He also joined the Stars' playoff run as part of the team's Black Aces, but didn't draw into a game. The 20-year-old is likely to be in the mix for an NHL job this year, especially with the Stars running thin at center with Tyler Seguin on the shelf to start the season. Dellandrea will need to outplay Nick Caamano and Joel L'Esperance in training camp -- if he doesn't, Dellandrea will likely spend most of the campaign with AHL Texas. Regardless of where he ends up, Dellandrea likely isn't much more than a year or two away from potential fantasy relevance. He could be worth a stash in dynasty formats, but managers in redraft leagues can wait to see how the Ontario native produces before investing in his talents.
