Earns win after missing weight
December 5, 2020
Smolka defeated Jose Quinonez via TKO (punches) at 2:15 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 19 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It was an excellent comeback victory for Smolka that is severely dampened by the fact he missed weight by three pounds Friday. This fight didn't start well for the 29-year-old Hawaiian. He looked a step slow on the feet throughout the course of Round 1, constantly getting off second in all the striking exchanges between the two men. Yet early in Round 2, Smolka was able to grab a hold of Quinonez, quickly flatten him out, and finish him with unanswered punches to the side of the head. It was a good stoppage from referee Jason Herzog. Smolka is one of the most inconsistent fighters in the company, which he openly admits, but he does have legitimate skills. Let's see if this strong victory is the start of a streak for him.

2-6 in past eight UFC bouts
May 30, 2020
Smolka lost to Casey Kenney via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:03 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Once viewed as a potential contender at flyweight, Smolka has been unable to string together back-to-back strong performances at bantamweight. Smolka did a nice job of working the body against the smaller Kenney, but he eventually ate a big sweeping left hand and found himself tapping out to a one-arm guillotine just moments later. Smolka has had two separate stints with the UFC. He began his time in the company with a 5-1 record. He is just 2-6 since. It's been a steady fall from grace for the 28-year-old Hawaiian.
