2-6 in past eight UFC bouts
May 30, 2020
Smolka lost to Casey Kenney via submission (guillotine choke) at 3:03 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Once viewed as a potential contender at flyweight, Smolka has been unable to string together back-to-back strong performances at bantamweight. Smolka did a nice job of working the body against the smaller Kenney, but he eventually ate a big sweeping left hand and found himself tapping out to a one-arm guillotine just moments later. Smolka has had two separate stints with the UFC. He began his time in the company with a 5-1 record. He is just 2-6 since. It's been a steady fall from grace for the 28-year-old Hawaiian.

Smolka will take on Casey Kenney in a bantamweight matchup on May 30 in Las Vegas, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Smolka won his bantamweight debut against Ryan MacDonald last September, improving to 2-1 in his last three fights. While most of his stats have been accumulated in the flyweight division, Smolka's 4.22 significant strikes landed per minute and 1.65 takedowns per 15 minutes are both superior than the marks of Kenney. Smolka will also own a two-inch height advantage on fight night.

First debuting for the UFC in 2014, Da Last Samurai has amassed a 7-6 record within the promotion at both catchweight and bantamweight. Comes up big in Vancouver
September 14, 2019
Smolka defeated Ryan MacDonald via TKO (punch) at 4:43 of Round 1 at UFC on ESPN+ 16 on Saturday in Vancouver.
It was one of the best possible fantasy outcomes for Smolka, who had nearly the entire first round to rack up striking points but still got the finish before the final bell. He eventually was credited with 59 significant strikes at a clip of 51 percent, landing 27 to the head and 31 to the body of MacDonald. Toss on the knockdown he recorded at the end of the round to start the finishing sequence, and fantasy owners will see Smolka will end up in a lot of winning lineups Saturday night. He's now 2-1 since his return to the UFC that started in late-2018.
Draws MacDonald for Vancouver
July 24, 2019
Smolka will face off against Ryan MacDonald during UFC Vancouver on Sept. 14, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
The 28-year-old Smolka is 15-6 as a pro, with his seven submissions accounting for the highest percentage of his victories. His most recent fight was a loss via submission (triangle choke) to Matt Schnell. Smolka's opponent, MacDonald, is 26 years old and 10-1 as a pro. Four of his victories have come by way of decision, while he has three submissions and three KO/TKOs apiece. His only loss occurred during his most recent fight, which was at the hands of Chris Gutierrez.
Falls back to losing ways
March 9, 2019
Smolka lost to Matt Schnell via submission (triangle choke) at 3:18 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.
Smolka was in the title conversation at flyweight not all that long ago, but it's been a sudden and swift fall from grace for the Hawaiian. Following a four-fight losing streak, Smolka left the company in December 2017. He racked up three meaningless victories in other promotions and returned to face "Su Mudaerji" in China in November. He won that fight, but as soon as he got back into the octagon against a legitimate opponent like Schnell, the struggles continued. Smolka's biggest asset at flyweight was his long frame and that is considerably less of an advantage at bantamweight. Smolka's body language is poor and his performance's inside the octagon are worse. It's entirely possible that the UFC decides to move on here.
