Molly McCann

Rebounds with strong effort
September 4, 2021
McCann defeated Ji Yeon Kim via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
McCann appeared to retire following her unanimous decision loss to Lara Procopio this past February, leaving her gloves inside the Octagon at the end of the bout, but she ultimately reconsidered and performed admirably in this hard-fought win over Kim. McCann allowed Kim to connect on a pair of takedowns in Round 1, but her solid striking defense carried her the rest of the way. Kim attempted a whopping 251 total strikes over the course of the final ten minutes, but landed just 72 of them. McCann did a much better job of picking her spots, and that was ultimately enough. McCann has been wildly inconsistent over the course of her time with the UFC, and there's no reason to think that will change now, but this was a nice effort. It will also earn her a $50,000 bonus after this matchup was awarded Fight of the Night honors.

Facing Ji Yeon Kim in September
May 17, 2021
McCann (10-4-0) is scheduled to face Ji Yeon Kim (9-3-2) in a flyweight fight at the UFC's Sept. 4 event, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Though there was some thought that McCann may have retired after she lost to Lara Procopio in her last appearance in the Octagon in February, the 31-year-old apparently isn't ready to step away from professional fighting just yet. McCann will look to put a two-fight losing streak to an end when she takes on Kim, who lost in her most recent trip to the Octagon in August 2020.
Appears to retire following loss
February 6, 2021
McCann lost to Lara Procopio via unanimous decision (27-29, 28-29, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
McCann left her gloves in the Octagon following the fight, apparently signaling her retirement. It would be a surprise development considering the 30-year-old Brit is a .500 fighter over the course of her first half-dozen UFC bouts, although she has lost two in a row. The main issue here is that McCann seems to be trending in the entirely wrong direction. She's fine on the feet, but her grappling, particularly her takedown defense, has been dreadful. Should McCann decides she wants to fight again, it's imperative she work on staying upright.
Matched against Lara Procopio
October 19, 2020
McCann will face Lara Procopio in a flyweight matchup on Feb. 6, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
The location for the card has not yet been announced. Both fighters will be coming off losses. McCann had won three straight before falling to Taila Santos by unanimous decision in July. Procopio lost her only UFC fight to date in August of 2019, falling by split decision to Karol Rosa.
No-shows loss in Abu Dhabi
July 15, 2020
McCann lost to Talia Santos via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
It was a dreadful effort from McCann and it came at the worst possible time. Entering on a three-fight winning streak, McCann really struggled with the physicality of Santos. Her complete inability to defend the takedown was ultimately her downfall. McCann allowed Santos to score on 5-of-7 tries and that led to a boatload of control time for the Brazilian. After this performance from McCann, it's fair to wonder if the moderate hype she had been receiving was simply the result of facing sub-par competition (Priscila Cachoeira, Ariane Lipski, Diana Belbita) her past few bouts.
Draws Santos on Fight Island
June 11, 2020
McCann will take on Taila Santos in a flyweight matchup July 15 on Fight Island, Jim Edwards of Fighters Only reports.
McCann has compiled three consecutive wins the in the UFC and had been hopeful to make it four at UFC London in March, but her bout against Ashley Evans-Smith was called off due to the pandemic. She'll now face another fighter in Santos who lost a June 20 booking herself due to COVID-19. McCann will be giving up a tremendous six inches in reach to Santos, so it will be interesting to see if she can continue her streak of three-straight fights with 100-plus significant strikes landed. "Meatball" has also registered two or more takedowns in each of those bouts, making her a relatively friendly fantasy scorer despite those fights all going to the judges.
