Roosevelt Roberts

The Predator

Routed by Ignacia Bahamondes
August 21, 2021
Roberts lost to Ignacio Bahamondes via KO (kick) at 4:55 of Round 3 at UFC on ESPN 29 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It's a crushing defeat for Roberts in another fight in which he entered as a substantial (-170) favorite. It's not as big of a disaster as his loss to Kevin Croom last September (which was later changed to a no-contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission), but Roberts' UFC run has quickly found itself on life support. Had he not been knocked out, Roberts would have dropped a clear cut unanimous decision. He landed just 65 total strikes compared to 124 from Bahamondes, in addition to failing on all 12 of his takedown attempts. Roberts has elite size (6-foot-1) for the lightweight division, but that's about it. He's winless in his past three fights (0-2, 1NC) on the heels of a 4-1 mark in his first five UFC bouts.

Looking to bounce back
July 29, 2021
Roberts will take on Ignacio Bahomondes in a lightweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for August 21, CC Legaspi of ESPN reports (via Marcel Dorff of MMADNA).
Once a highly-regarded prospect, Roberts' stock fell significantly when he was submitted in 30 seconds by UFC newcomer Kevin Croom last September. He caught a major break, however, as the result was overturned to a no-contest following a positive cannabis test by Croom. Roberts will now get a step down in competition as he looks to build back the same profile he had earned by starting his UFC run with a 4-1 record. It still won't be an easy task against Bahamondes -- a high-volume striker with power who lost his UFC debut in April by split decision. Roberts will be at height and reach disadvantages against his younger opponent.
Falls as massive favorite
September 12, 2020
Roberts lost to Kevin Croom via submission (guillotine choke) at 0:31 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
What a disaster. Coming off a submission loss to Jim Miller in June and facing an opponent making his UFC debut as a (+450) underdog, Roberts lasted all of 31 seconds. Roberts has gotten some publicity as a potential sleeper at lightweight, but his results with the company have been extremely inconsistent. His record with the UFC is barely over .500 (4-3), and he's trending in the wrong direction. Roberts has both size (6-foot-1) and youth (26 years old) on his side, but this was a clear step backwards for the California native.
New opponent on tap

Roberts will square off against Kevin Croom after Matt Frevola was removed from the card Friday, Mike Heck of reports.
No reason was given for Frevola's removal from the card, but Croom was ready and waiting in the wings for the opportunity. Roberts was a slight favorite to win against Frevola but seems likely to be a larger favorite over Croom.
Facing Frevola in September
August 10, 2020
Roberts is slated to face Matt Frevola in a lightweight fight in the UFC event set for Sept. 12 in Las Vegas, Marcel Dorff of reports.
Roberts will be making his first appearance in the Octagon since June, when he lost to Jim Miller via submission. Prior to that loss, Roberts had claimed back-to-back victories, winning via unanimous decision over Alexander Yakovlev in November 2019 and submitting Brok Weaver in the second round May 30.
Facing six-month medical ban
June 23, 2020
The Nevada State Athletic Commission handed Roberts a six-month medical suspension Tuesday after he sustained a left elbow injury in his armbar submission loss to Jim Miller over the weekend at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Damon Martin of reports.
Roberts is slated to undergo an MRI and X-ray on the elbow in the near future. If his doctor determines that Roberts sustained any structural damage, the 26-year-old will be banned from competition until Dec. 18, unless he receives full medical clearance before that date. Roberts own a 4-2 UFC record since debuting with the promotion in November 2018.
