Rebound following slow start
May 1, 2021
Colares defeated Luke Sanders via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Colares' victory was more the result of Sanders collapsing as opposed to anything the Brazilian did correctly, but Colares will take it. He had a difficult time in the early going when both men were fresh. Thankfully for Colares, Sanders completely gassed out after about four minutes and he took full advantage. Colares is a solid mat specialist who offers very little power. His conditioning is also mediocre. He has looked like little more than roster depth through his first four UFC bouts, posting a 2-2 mark. Expect the 27-year-old to hover right around the .500 mark moving forward.
Now fighting Luke Sanders
April 23, 2021
Colares will now fight Luke Sanders instead of Journey Newson on the UFC's May 1 card, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Colares was originally supposed to fight Journey Newson and Sanders was originally supposed to fight Damon Jackson at UFC Fight Night 190 on May 1 but Newson and Jackson are now out of their fights and the UFC has decided to pair Colares with Sanders instead. Both Colares and Sanders have struggled as of late with the 35-year-old dropping two of his last three bouts and his opponent losing four of his last six. They'll each enter the Octagon with something to prove as they look to impress and build their UFC resume with a win.
Booked for May 1 bout
February 25, 2021
Colares (illness) will take on Journey Newson on the UFC's May 1 card, Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports.
Colares was removed from his bout scheduled for November against Gustavo Lopez after he tested positive for COVID-19. With that apparently in the rearview, he is set for his next chance to bounce back from a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Montel Jackson in January of 2020. Colares may be fighting Journey Newson, another struggling fighter with a winless recording since joining the UFC, to keep his hopes of remaining in the UFC afloat. Colares sports a three-inch height and a two-inch reach advantage over his opponent, though he typically looks to take it to the mat.
Tests positive for COVID-19
November 1, 2020
It was revealed Sunday that Colares tested positive for COVID-19 and subsequently is out of his fight with Gustavo Lopez on Nov. 7, Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting reports.
Colares' positive test comes at a terrible time as he was set to enter the Octagon in just under a week. The UFC is currently in the process of searching for a replacement fighter to face Lopez. It's unclear when Colares will fight next once he is cleared of the virus.
Fight set for November
August 29, 2020
Colares has agreed to fight Gustavo Lopez in a bantamweight bout Nov. 7, Farah Hannoun of MMAJunkie.com reports.
Colares hasn't entered the Octagon since being defeated by Montel Jackson via unanimous decision in January. He's 1-2 in the UFC ranks, while Lopez lost his only UFC bout in June.
