Taps in 45 seconds at UFC 276
July 2, 2022
Riddell lost to Jalin Turner via submission (guillotine choke) at 0:45 of Round 1 at UFC 276 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
What a disaster. Gifted an opportunity to compete in the featured prelim fight on ABC, Riddell lasted all of 45 seconds. He got clipped with a right hand and was forced to push forward for a takedown out of necessity, and that allowed Turner to grab his neck and clamp on the guillotine that ended the fight. Riddell had little pedigree upon debuting in the UFC in October 2019, but still managed to win his first four fights with the company, all via decision. The competition level has risen lately, and Riddell has lost two straight since in the span of seven months, both via stoppage. The 30-year-old will find himself in must-win territory his next time out.
Fighting Jalin Turner at UFC 276
May 16, 2022
Riddell will square off against Jalin Turner at UFC 276 on July 2, Marcel Dorff of reports.
Riddell is coming off of his first career UFC loss to Rafael Fiziev last time, out, falling via KO (spinning wheel kick) in the third round. He'll aim to get back on track versus Turner, who is riding high on a four-match winning streak entering the bout. Riddell yields six inches of height and reach to his opponent, giving up a major size difference.
Gets put on highlight reel
December 6, 2021
Riddell lost to Rafael Fiziev via KO (spinning wheel kick) at 2:20 of Round 3 at UFC Vegas 44 on Saturday.
Riddell got off to a solid start and may have very well won a close opening round due to a solid combination that ended the frame. The numbers started to turn in the direction of Fiziev in Round 2, who had opened up a cut on Riddell in the process of landing 30 significant strikes. After getting clearance from the cageside physician, Riddell opened Round 3 with a few kicks before catching one from Fiziev and getting a takedown. Fiziev got right back up and Riddell unsuccessfully attempted another takedown. It wasn't long after that Fiziev recorded the highlight-reel finish. This was an airtight matchup on paper and proved to be one of the better contests of the evening, and even though Riddell snapped a four-fight winning streak to begin his UFC tenure, his stock didn't drop a ton here.
Looking to crack top-10
September 2, 2021
Riddell will take on Rafael Fiziev in a lightweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Dec. 4, Farah Hannoun and Nolan King of USA Today report.
After starting his UFC run with a perfect 4-0 record featuring two Fight of the Night bonuses, Riddell will get another step up in competition as he looks to crack the top-10 of the lightweight rankings. Riddell will face a high-volume striker in Fiziev, but he should see his openings on offense, as Fiziev absorbs more significant strikes per minute than he delivers. Also in favor of Riddell is offensive wrestling volume, though Fiziev has never been taken down in five UFC fights. Riddell will give up an inch in height, while both men sport 71-inch reaches.
Digs deep to get past Drew Dober
June 12, 2021
Riddell defeated Drew Dober via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 263 on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.
This was by far the biggest test of Riddell's career and he passed it with flying colors. Riddell could have packed his bags and gone back to New Zealand following a straight shot from Dober which flattened him in Round 1, but he managed to survive and gain the momentum over the course of the final ten minutes. Riddell's biggest moment of the fight came with just seconds left. He popped Dober and followed up with some big shots and a submission attempt before the clock expired. If nothing else, this performance showed Riddell -- who trains with Israel Adesanya and the crew at City Kickboxing -- is a legitimate top-15 lightweight. He'll not only get his win bonus here, but will take home another $50,000 after this matchup was awarded Fight of the Night honors. The 29-year-old should be primed for a big bout his next time out. Riddell is a perfect 4-0 in the UFC.
