Falls to 1-5 in past six bouts
March 18, 2023
Amirkhani lost to Jack Shore via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:27 of Round 2 at UFC 286 on Saturday in London.
It was a tale of two fights for Amirkhani, who entered as a +425 underdog. He won Round 1 on all three scorecards on the strength of a takedown and north of three minutes (3:31) worth of control time, but Amirkhani appeared to completely drain his gas tank in the process. It led to him being battered by Shore on the feet early in Round 2 before tapping out to a rear-naked choke late in the frame. The roof has caved in on the 34-year-old "Mr. Finland" over the course of the past two and a half years, as Amirkhani is now sporting a 1-5 record in his past half-dozen bouts. Four of those fight defeats have come against quality competition (Shore, Jonathan Pearce, Lerone Murphy, Edson Barboza), but it still wouldn't be a shock if the UFC decided to cut its losses here.
Fighting Shore at UFC 286
January 19, 2023
Amirkhani is scheduled to face Jack Shore in a bout at UFC 286 in London on March 18, USA Today reports.
Both fighters are returning to the Octagon following losses in their previous bouts back in July. Amirkhani dropped his matchup with Jonathan Pearce via second-round TKO. He is now 1-4 in his last five bouts.
Inconsistent ways continue
July 23, 2022
Amirkhani lost to Jonathan Pearce via TKO (punches) at 4:10 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
Amirkhani snapped a three-fight losing streak with a 57-second submission win over Mike Grundy this past March, but he once again found himself in a difficult spot in this one. The highlight of Makwan's evening was the fact he landed 3-of-7 takedown attempts. On the flip side, he allowed Pearce to land 4-of-5 tries. Amirkhani also found himself on the short end of a 144-12 count in total strikes landed. That number is not a misprint. Amirkhani ate a ton of elbows in tight, before being stopped by Pearce after a flurry from top position. The 33-year-old faces an uphill climb in order to simply earn a handful of more fights under the UFC banner.
Draws Pearce
May 21, 2022
Amirkhani will take on Jonathan Pearce at UFC London on July 23, Marcel Dorff of reports.
Amirkhani recently bounced back from a three-fight losing streak by defeating Mike Grundy via a Round 1 submission at UFC Fight Night in March. He will look to build on that when he steps in the octagon with Pearce, who is currently riding a three fight winning streak.
57-second submission victory
March 19, 2022
Amirkhani defeated Mike Grundy via submission (anaconda choke) at 0:57 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
It was arguably Amirkhani's best performance to date and one that almost certainly saved his job. Entering the loser of three in a row, Makwan needed a victory any way he could get one, and he ended up with a 57-second submission win in enemy territory. He'll earn a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus for his efforts here, which was the case for every fighter on the card who produced a finish. Known for his wrestling, Grundy pushed forward for an immediate takedown seconds after the opening bell rang, and Amirkhani was ready for it. He grabbed a hold of his opponent's head as the two went to the mat and worked for the finish. Grundy went to sleep instead of tapping out. The victory should buy "Mr. Finland" some time as he looks to regain his footing at 145 pounds.
