2026 Fantasy Outlook
Romero remains one of the better ball-playing center backs in the league and captains Tottenham under manager Roberto De Zerbi, though injuries limited him to 23 appearances in 2025/26. He offers unusual attacking value for a defender, chipping in four goals largely from set pieces, but the fantasy problem is twofold, as his fitness is unreliable and Spurs kept only four clean sheets in his games during a difficult, relegation-threatened campaign. If De Zerbi tightens the defense, his clean-sheet potential improves, and the goal threat is a genuine bonus. He is a boom-or-bust defender, capable of hauls from set pieces but hard to trust for shutouts on this team. Worth a look for the attacking upside, but temper expectations on availability and clean sheets.
Forced off with injury

July 19, 2026
Romero was forced off in the 70th minute of Sunday's match against Spain due to an apparent injury.
ANALYSIS
Romero would be the second center-back to leave the field for Argentina on Sunday, as the defender couldn't continue due to an injury. With 20 minutes left to play in the final, this is a major loss for the team, with Nicolas Otamendi and Facundo Medina now serving in the middle of the defense. Romero ended the tournament, starting in all seven of his World Cup appearances while recording one goal, 10 interceptions, 16 tackles and 27 clearances. More importantly for the center-back, this comes just a month ahead of the start of his season with Tottenham, hoping the injury is only minor.

Romero (knee) has returned to full training with the Argentina squad's starting group and is expected to start against Cape Verde barring any late setback, according to manager Lionel Scanloni, per TYC Sports. "In principle, it's fine. If he goes out to play, it's because he's available. He has done well, completed training and we will evaluate between today and tomorrow if he continues just as well."

Could make shock Arsenal move
DTottenham Hotspur

August 8, 2026
Arsenal are interested in signing Romero, although Tottenham have no intention of selling the Argentina international to their north London rivals, according to The Mirror.
ANALYSIS
Romero would be an ideal addition to Arsenal's back line, which needs a quality addition, since William Saliba will be out for a long period due to a back injury. However, completing a transfer between fierce rivals has always appeared highly unlikely, and this won't be the exception. Tottenham's refusal to negotiate means Arsenal will almost certainly have to look elsewhere unless circumstances change dramatically. Romero continues to be linked with teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid.
