ANALYSIS
It's kind of unusual to see any players released within the first few days of spring training, especially when they just agreed to a minor league deal in the offseason, as Tatum did. In any case, he's expendable organizational catching depth and is easily replaceable should the Marlins choose to invite another catcher to camp.

Tatum was claimed off waivers by the Astros in October. He remained useless at the plate for the Orioles in 2011, posting a .475 OPS. He wasn't much better in the minors, either, posting just a .535 mark at Triple-A. Look for him to serve as organizational depth for Houston, where his chances to start are slightly improved now that he's no longer the caddy to workhorse Matt Wieters in Baltimore.
Tatum served as a capable backup to Matt Wieters, but the Orioles also used Jake Fox as a backup and sent Tatum down to Triple-A for a time. It is unlikely he will ever see starting time with the Orioles, but he should be able to stick around as a backup for a while.
The Orioles claimed Tatum off waivers from the Reds in November and he's currently slated to be Matt Wieters' caddy. He's got a strong defensive reputation, which is good for his long-term job security, because he offers nothing with the bat.
The Reds added Tatum to their 40-man roster because they utterly lack other upper-level minor league catchers beside Ryan Hanigan. He regressed badly at the plate upon reaching higher levels, creating doubt that he'll ever make it as a major leaguer.
