Recovering from Tommy John surgery

August 4, 2021
Maxwell underwent Tommy John surgery in July and won't return this season, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Maxwell had been out of the lineup for Double-A Richmond since late June, but he only got the surgery about a week and a half ago. He ends 2021 with a .211/.319/.351 slash line, two home runs, 12 RBI and seven runs scored in just 18 games between Richmond and Triple-A Syracuse when he was in the Mets' organization. The catcher hopes to continue his playing career, but at 30 years old, a return to the majors isn't that likely.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
Maxwell mostly struggled at the plate in 2017 and he was arrested on an assault charge in the offseason, but his standing on the team seems largely unaffected. He appears in line to open the season on the strong side of a catching platoon barring any discipline from the league or further off-the-field issues, starting against nearly all opposing right-handed pitchers while Josh Phegley or Dustin Garneau handle the lefties. The catcher position is so poor that even a platoon bat in an extreme pitcher's park is highly relevant. Maxwell walked at a great 12.3 percent clip last season, but even so, managed just a .296 wOBA and 84 wRC+. He struck out in one quarter of his plate appearances and the splash of home-run power that he showed at Triple-A in 2016 was completely absent although Maxwell did have a respectable 35.2 percent hard-hit rate.
Maxwell never overwhelmed scouts with his performance at the plate during his time in the minor leagues, but the German-born catcher broke out at the plate in his first taste of the Triple-A level. During his time in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, the 25-year-old slashed .321/.393/.539 to go with 10 home runs and 41 runs batted in. Thanks to this strong showing, Maxwell ended up being the player called up when the Athletics were short on catchers at the major league level, and he certainly made the most of his opportunity. In 92 at-bats, he batted .283 with six doubles, a home run and 14 RBI. He doesn't have much prospect shine, but results carry a lot of weight, which should allow the backstop to compete for a roster spot in spring training. That being said, looking at his historical numbers at the plate and his ridiculously high .373 BABIP, it's hard to believe that his 2016 campaign was anything more than an incredibly well-timed outlier.
