Other than his decision to file for free agency, there's nothing about Schilling to suggest he plans on pitching this season. Schilling recently signed a deal to become a baseball analyst/blogger at a local radio station's Web site, suggesting he might be ready to retire. After missing all of last season with a biceps/shoulder injury, the 42-year-old Schilling faces a large uphill climb back to the majors.

The Cubs have not ruled out the possibility of signing Schilling to a low-base, one-year contract, the Chicago Tribune reports. He probably wouldn't be ready to pitch until June or July because he had shoulder surgery last summer.

Schilling, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on June 23, said in an interview with Sporting News that he might try to pitch in 2009 under the right circumstances, perhaps a half season, the Associated Press reports. "I won’t come back for a full season, that much I know. If I do decide to come back I would work to the point I was ready and somewhere around May 1 let the teams know I wanted to pitch the second half," he said.
