2008
Fruto was acquired from Washington for Chris Carter in August, but he wasn't called up by Arizona down the stretch last season. The scouting report on him hasn't changed much since his days in the Seattle organization, as he's still a high-upside bullpen candidate given his strikeout rate, but his lack of command continues to hold him back (82:69 K:BB rate in 98.3 Triple-A innings). Perhaps a full season with his new coaching staff will help him take the next step, but wait for some concrete evidence before giving him serious consideration.
2007
Fruto, who sports an impressive change-up, was traded to the Nationals in the offseason as part of the Jose Vidro deal. He split time between Seattle and Triple-A Tacoma last season. At Tacoma, he posted a 3:1 K:BB and opponents hit just .204 against him. He wasn't so fortunate at Seattle. He'll compete for a bullpen spot in spring training, but could bounce between Washington and Triple-A.
2006
Fruto recorded 12 saves for Low-A Wisconsin last year as he shared the closing duties. His nearly 3/1 K/BB ratio and 2.57 ERA in 66 2/3 IP are welcomed, but he needs seasoning at Triple-A Tacoma. Fruto has excellent stuff and could land a bullpen job with the Mariners in 2007.
