Gomez spent most of 2007 with Baltimore before joining Cleveland in August. He's capable enough with the glove to handle all four infield positions but doesn't hit enough to warrant fantasy consideration. He will be used in a utility role after signing with the Pirates.

Gomez batted .341/.387/.439 in 132 at-bats in 2006 around a broken hand that sidelined him for a large chunk of the season, including a torrid September where he batted .437/.452/.563 in 71 at-bats. He’ll be the Orioles’ primary utility infielder again in 2007, but won’t see enough at-bats for fantasy relevance absent an injury to a regular, and even then he’s only a marginal play at best due to his dearth of power and speed.

Gomez served as the main utility infielder for the Orioles in 2005, even serving as the right-handed part of the team's first-base platoon after Rafael Palmeiro faltered against lefties early in the season. He finished with an admirable .279 average, .317 against lefties, but figures to be relegated back to a utility role in 2006. He won't see regular playing time unless the team suffers a few injuries to their main infielders.

Gomez saw time all over the diamond in 2004, but is likely eligible only at first and short in most leagues with just five games at third and three at second. With the Orioles, he's stuck behind the most durable shortstop in the AL in Miguel Tejada, and isn’t even the best utility infielder on the team (see: Newhan, David). Expect a few scattered at-bats mostly against lefties for Gomez in 2005.

Gomez is now a utility infielder as it appears his days of a regular job are a thing of the past. He learned to play third base with Minnesota last season, which helps his flexibility. He's a streaky hitter, so he could provide short-term value if he fills in for an injured starter.

It used to be that hitting .265 with 10 homers was pretty good for a shortstop, but not anymore. Still, he'll probably catch on with another club, and if he does, he might be a decent very-late-round play, since he can hit a little, usually in streaks.
