Recent Blog Post: Sweating the Final Week of the Season
There's a lot of obvious stories to follow in this last week, but here's two lesser stories that might affect keeper leagues.

The Jays called up Travis Snider on Aug. 28 in a last-ditch effort to push them into the playoff race, after he had just 18 games at Triple-A Syracuse. I thought that this was premature, but so far he's been pretty good, hitting .348/.392/.565. The big key for him was to watch the walks and strikeouts, and so far his ratio is 4:11 - not good, but not awful either. But his performance isn't necessarily what we're looking for. In many keeper leagues, whether he'll still qualify as a minor leaguer (and thus be cheaper to retain) depends on his service time. In standard Scoresheet Keeper Leagues, the threshhold is at 70 at-bats. Right now Snider has 46 at-bats, with eight games left to go. His owners are going to sweat this pretty closely. Standard roto leagues have a 20+ games requirement - he's at 15 games.

Meanwhile, Pablo Sandoval has made the leap from High-A to the majors with the Giants this year, and has continued to hit upon his arrival with the Giants, hitting .344/.358/.500, with the same 4:11 BB:K, albeit in 128 at-bats. He was a catcher in the minors, and he's caught some in the majors, but he's at risk of not qualifying there in many leagues next year. Right now, he has 15 games at first base, 11 at catcher, and 10 at third. He might not get to 20 games at any position, making it the one where he plays the most as where he qualifies. If he doesn't have that catcher-eligibility next year, it drops his value a decent amount, and he might not get it in the future, either. Bengie Molina will be back for another year, and Buster Posey will be pushing hard next year.

There's probably countless other stories like this to follow. What are some that you are tracking?

RotoWire Update
SF  2/24/2007
San Francisco GM Brian Sabean’s future hinges on the upcoming season, the Giants’ official site reports. Sabean’s days as an upper-tier GM have long since passed, and managing general partner Peter Magowan said that his immediate future with the Giants will be reviewed after the season. This is the final year of Sabean's contract, which likely won't be renewed if the Giants duplicate their third place National League West finishes of 2005-06. Sabean was promoted to GM on Sept. 30, 1996, and ushered the Giants through eight winning seasons in a row, each producing a first- or second-place finish. Still, flawed personnel decisions hastened the Giants' struggles, and the farm system is rather barren as well. Sabean’s job status deserves to be tenuous.
