Thumb
April 16, 2009
Wright suffered a broken thumb in the team's regular season finale Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
The loss of Wright shouldn't hurt the Cavalier's playoff chances and, at worst, hurts their depth. The team is already without the services of J.J. Hickson at the same position.

Wright teased us with potential throughout his career, and even put together a decent three-year stretch when he averaged 12 points and eight rebounds a night. Unfortunately, that was long ago, and he averaged career lows in nearly every category last year. About the only thing he has going for him this point is that he's the only experienced true center on the roster. If rookie Al Horford proves he can handle the position, he may steal the few precious remaining minutes Wright has left.
Though a bit undersized for the position, Wright provides Atlanta with a capable backup to Zaza Pachulia at center, something the team didn't have last year. He has some offensive skills, and is a good rebounder despite his slight frame. He probably won't get enough playing time to be valuable.
Forces are lining up that might produce a very productive season from Wright. First, he’s entering the final year of his contract. Second, he’s unhappy enough in Memphis to have demanded a trade. And lastly, he no longer has to share the starting job with Stromile Swift, who signed as a free agent with Houston, leaving the job to Wright and backup Jake Tsakalidis. Bottom line, he wants out and has the opportunity to play his way out, rather than sitting on the bench. If he can get more than 30 minutes a game – he hasn’t averaged more than 29.1 mpg in his four seasons with the Grizzlies – Wright should be putting up 10 points and nine rebounds per game.
Wright has put up some serviceable numbers at center in his three seasons with the Grizzlies, but has yet to be given the job full time. Some of that may be attributable to injuries, but the club continues to look for a bigger presence in the low post. Memphis could bring in a better player, or continue to use Wright in a job-share with Stromile Swift.
Wright will start at center and should post solid numbers provided he stays healthy. 11 points and eight boards a game is not out of the question for Wright.
